Brian?s experience in sculpting with hard serpentines extends to other kinds of sculpting media. At sixteen years old, Brian assisted his uncle, Peter Mandala, polishing soap stone sculpture. After finishing his ?O? levels in 1992, he decided to apprentice another uncle, Isaac Mapfumo, who worked in wood carving. During his seven years of apprenticeship, Brian had many sculpting influences. In 1993, he joined an artist?s cooperative, experimenting with his own sculpting style. Sculptor Boira Mteki met Brian and urged him to become his apprentice. Brian accepted and worked with Boira at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare until 1995. During that period, Brian also worked with another well known artist, Joseph Muzondo to gain even more experience. Despite much of his training, Brian believes in his own innate talent. He aspires to create original, innovative work that is unique amongst his peers. His work appears quite traditional in its depiction of families and groups of women - at its core is a sense of spirituality and strong family values. His work can be found in numerous private collections and galleries throughout the United Kingdom and South Africa.
