Pietro Adamo was born in Toronto, Canada in 1955. He enrolled in the Fine Art and Art History programs at the University of Toronto and Sheridan College. Upon graduation, he became an art professor at Chaminade College in Toronto. There, he established a strong visual arts program, one which saw his students go on to become architects, designers and fine artists. During his two decades of teaching, Adamo continued to execute private and public commissions of his work. By 1997, these commissions began to command more of his attention. He left his teaching position and dedicated himself to painting full time. Today, he creates his works in his home studio, continually exploring the potential of self expression through painting.
Adamo clearly delights in the unbridled, intuitive nature of his forms. He emphasizes his arts? liberating quality; ?I have to paint?to speak without words, to express myself without restrictions?never relenting?. One can find optimism and strength in his raw, emotional use of colour.
The paintings of Pietro Adamo are celebrations of the artist?s admiration for the ?unpredictable and inexhaustible record of life?. Adamo abandons the conventional renderings of geometric forms through his textured surfaces and rough contours. Layers upon layers of vibrant colours dynamically emerge and recede within the canvas. It is this illusion that gives Adamo?s work its sensational mood.
?The colour and texture of nature and the simple iconography of my ancestry combine to form the language of my art. Looking out from a sun soaked Calabrian balcony, I am confronted by the juxtaposition of simple, yet exquisite majolica tiles set against a majestic blue sky and the ruins of a Greek temple. I am reminded of the delicate balance of all things great and small. These same sentiments engage me as I stand on my studio balcony in Kleinberg, Ontario. Surrounded by the Canadian landscape, I am struck by the autumn colours and by the tiny ferns carpeting the floor of the mighty pine and birch forest.
?P. Adamo.
Adamo?s work is widely known, especially his poster publications. He has also created more than three series of limited edition three-plate etchings and a set of hand-pulled serigraphs. His mixed media paintings on paper are often created as a series and are often named after towns found in Italy ? a favourite travel destination for Adamo and his family.
