Rez Raven was born in Persia in 1962. It was there that he began his studies in art. Rez furthered his education at the University of Toronto, Canada where he studied graphic design. His early work incorporated collage and oil onto canvas. In the late nineties, Rez painted highly abstracted animal and human forms onto textured canvas and paper using vivid colours ? mainly primaries - red, blue and yellow. He was exploring the mystic qualities of man, animal and the natural world they share.
2002 saw a change in Rez Raven?s direction to a somewhat formal exploration of line and colour relationships. Colours, (often warm), shift into each other, often delineated by a charcoal line ?sometimes creating tension, sometimes creating harmony. Some colours recede into the background, some proceed into the foreground ? perhaps mimicking our ever changing moods which surround us. His roughly sketched figures, a mere suggestion of corporeal form, are often minimized or even overwhelmed by these moods of colour.
So as not to divert the viewers attention from his colour dimensions, Rez has moved away from his earlier, more textured surfaces. Each work is unique ? each is a special exploration of the psyche. According to Rez ?There are intentional coincidences and possibilities [in my work]. My hope is that the onlooker will use the work to help in enriching self-awareness, discovery and harmony.?
