Henry Munyaradzi, one of Zimbabwe's most prominent stone sculptors, was born in 1931 in Guruve, a Northern region of Zimbabwe. Henry was a simple, humble man with no formal schooling and understood very little english. His father, a spirit medium, left his family when Henry was very young. His childhood was typical of rural Zimbabwe at the time - hunting game and herding cattle. His first job was as village blacksmith. Later he took up carpentry, then worked for some time as a tobacco grader.
Henry's sculpting career began in 1967 after meeting and being inspired by Tom Blomefield, a well known authority on Zimbabwean stone sculpture and owner of Tengenenge Sculptors' Community where Henry stayed and worked for some time. Henry drew his inspiration from the shape of the stone itself. His work is best known for its flat rectangular shapes, and simple but characteristic facial features. His work has often been compared to that of Klee and Picasso - two artists Henry would never have heard of. Henry exhibited world wide to much acclaim with his one man shows and earned the respect of artists and art lovers the world over.
Henry died in 1998.
