Artists:BackJonathon Gutsa Born in Murewa, Zimbabwe
Jonathon Gutsa comes from a large family of sculptors who have lent the good name of “Gutsa” to what is happening in stone in Zimbabwe. Each of the Gutsa’s has given their individual stamp to what takes place in stone in the country. Tapfuma Gutsa the oldest, art educated in the UK, has brought to bear upon, stone sculpture with a classical inclination with influences of western sculpture, ranging from ancient torsos in museums to post-modernist ideas lodged in material form. Jonathon Gutsa’s approach is simple -he turns to the natural world and what can be tangibly seen in his work. He has made a bull, a large, perfectly proportioned bull in which he has left the stone completely uncarved. This is a Brahmin Bull of Zimbabwe, with a hump placed with exactitude in the middle of its back. Here is seen the residual power of the bull, its grand stature and high standing among bulls.
Jonathon Gutsa works with sculptor Dominic Benhura in the outdoor “Dominic’s Studio”. Here among other sculptors there is the chance to stand back, to consider the stones, to think about sculpture and what it means. Here Jonathon Gutsa explores with some relish and foresight the human figure, the anatomical proportions of it in stone, the way the torso joins the thighs, the thighs the ankles, the ankles the feet. He moves forward a new and classically becoming figurative tradition in the stone sculpture, based on the sculptor's actual appreciation of the human figures they see around them. Gutsa’s sculptors look towards the perfect figure for the woman and man, and achieve this end to more than some degree.
Through sculptor Dominic Benhura, Gutsa has had the chance to show his work internationally and has a growing audience outside of Zimbabwe of those who enjoy and appreciate figurative sculpture. But his Brahmin Bull stands for the beauty of the land and animals of Zimbabwe, high and proud and not to be forgotten.
